Anti-Democratic Threats Could Ignite Election Chaos

As you know, a lot of questions arose about election integrity following the 2020 presidential election, with many claiming that the results were not as they should have been or that the election was even stolen.

Naturally, those who believe as much and even those who just want to make sure such confusion does not happen again have pushed to create some new laws since then. And so far, they’ve been succeeding.

According to reports, 32 new election laws were passed in 17 different states last year. This year saw a proposed 244 similar rules in other states. And while only 24 of those so far have been passed into law, it means elections such as the upcoming November midterms as well as the presidential election of 2024 could look a bit different.

But as some say, it could also cause quite a massive amount of chaos.

Take States United Democracy Center and Protect Democracy, for example. The organization is a nonpartisan one aimed at supporting democratic elections, meaning fair ones, in which the voices of the people are heard, not the political party.

However, it would seem that they also have some ties to the more left-leaning of parties, at least when you look at how they view Donald Trump and his claims of election/voter fraud.

In a recent report from them, they claim that these new laws in multiple states will “make it easier for hyperpartisan actors to stir up the doubt, chaos, and confusion that could be used as a pretext for election subversion.”

And according to the group’s senior counsel, Victoria Bassetti, most of those laws, whether proposed or passed, were concocted by Republican officials and proved an “evolving and deepening” trend of election subversion among them.

Of course, she isn’t the only person to agree with such sentiments.

Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold says that the anti-democratic agenda of Republicans will “undermine free and fair elections for the American people, strip Americans of the right to vote, refuse to address security breaches, and, unfortunately, be more beholden to Mar-a-Lago than the American people.”

She even goes so far as to say that if these laws are allowed to be used, we’ll not only see a wealth of Republican victories come November, but we will “lose the right to vote in less than three months.”

That’s right. She’s of the mind that if Republicans are allowed to win in November, then the American people will no longer be free or have the right to choose our leaders in the future. She, like most Democrats, has gone off the deep end and assumed the worst, claiming we will somehow fall completely into fascism within mere months.

Democratic Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has made similar accusations.

In written testimony to Congress’ Senate Judiciary Committee in August, she said that these laws are nothing but a “direct extension of the efforts to spread false information” about the 2020 election, its results, and the security and accuracy of our elections. Of course, she also claims that 2020’s election was the “most secure, accessible, and transparent” in our nation’s history.

The report from States United Democracy Center points to current state elections as evidence of this supposed threat.

Every primary race that took place last month and will occur in September has at least one individual running for Secretary of State (usually the highest election official in the state) who says that 2020 wasn’t fair. Of all of the secretary of state primaries for the year, over half include a denier of 2020 election results. And about one in four of those won their primaries.

Such primary winners include those such as the GOP nominee for Arizona’s secretary of state, Mark Finchem, and Michigan’s counterpart Kristina Karamo. Pennsylvania’s GOP candidate for Governor is also at odds with the 2020 results.

According to Benson and Griswold, these primary winners are only “perpetuating those dangerous theories” and eroding the confidence the American people have in our election system, which will, in turn, ruin our democracy.

But is that what’s actually happening? Or are Democrats just sorry about losing and fearful of losing their current power?
