Joe Biden sure knows how to pick ‘em. As it turns out, his top science advisor Eric Lander is not a very likable guy. It took complaint after complaint from his disheveled staff to finally have their authoritarian boss investigated. When an overabundance of evidence confirmed Lander’s tyrant and bullish ways, he collected his Bunsen burners and quit. Lander is the first Cabinet-level member of the Biden administration to walk off the job.
As the former director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, the investigation found Lander’s disrespect for those under his command, intolerable. Initially, Biden offered Lander an opportunity to keep his job following a stern White House rebuke.
On Inauguration Day, Joe Biden made it abundantly clear how he expected nothing short of “honesty and decency” from his staff. He raised a finger and vowed to fire anyone “on the spot” who showed disrespect of any type to anyone.
Yet, despite the avalanche of testimonies and confirmations against the character of his buddy Lander, it didn’t go as he said it would. He lied. Lander was “on the spot” offered a second chance that Biden was hoping he would accept.
All Biden had to say about Lander’s resignation came via White House press secretary Jen Psaki who said he accepted it with “gratitude for his work at OTSP on the pandemic, the Cancer Moonshot, climate change, and other key priorities.”
The White House claims it didn’t request that Lander quit but here’s what his hogwash resignation letter said. “I am devastated that I caused hurt to past and present colleagues by the way in which I have spoken to them. I believe it is not possible to continue effectively in my role, and the work of this office is far too important to be hindered.”
What he meant to say was that he was tired of finding screwdrivers sticking out of his car’s tires. Probably…
Psaki said that senior administration officials had decided to allow Lander to stay on the job in keeping with a required “process” for dealing with complaints. “Following the conclusion of the thorough investigation into these actions, senior White House officials conveyed directly to Dr. Lander that his behavior was inappropriate, and the corrective actions that were needed, which White House will monitor for compliance moving forward.”
But, but, but…That’s not what Biden said. Lander should not have been offered a second chance and his letter of resignation should never have been accepted. Security should have bounced his raggedy foul-mouthed disrespectful donkey out the front door. You know the Don would have. And he’d have made it in-your-face public knowledge.
The damage has been done. When staff members throughout the White House caught wind of Biden not firing Lander, it caused some consternation. News of the decision became the talk of the town to the point of creating a major distraction from other tasks at hand.
Shortly before Lander’s resignation was accepted he had been disinvited from speaking at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. CEO Sudip Parikh said he has no idea if that prompted Lander to quit.
Regardless, the mad scientist is gone, and Joe Biden is a perpetual liar. In days of yore, it was said that a “man’s word is as good as his bond.” You would think at Biden’s ripe old age, he’d remember that expression and abide by it. But, then, there’s that damn dementia…
