Oh, Kamala Harris is always full of surprises! Our Vice President and her husband, Doug Emhoff, have been busy cutting checks to a progressive legal group, Legal Aid DC, which is all about defunding the police and turning D.C. into a permanent “sanctuary city” for illegal immigrants. That’s right, folks, the same Kamala who now tries to dodge her left-wing past every chance she gets.
According to their tax return, legal Aid DC, a nonprofit in our nation’s capital, received $1,000 from Harris and Emhoff in 2023. They did the same in 2021, the media found in financial disclosures. These donations come as Harris faces heat on the 2024 campaign trail over her 2020 support for defunding the police and her bungled handling of the border crisis. Despite her supposed about-face on many progressive policies, her continued support for Legal Aid DC suggests she’s still cozy with the far-left activists.
Founded in 1932, Legal Aid DC claims to be the district’s oldest and largest civil legal services organization, aiming to “make justice real.” Back in 2020, as riots erupted nationwide after George Floyd’s death, the group’s project coordinator, Adam Jacobs, voiced solidarity with those protesting for dignity and respect. Days later, their housing attorney Amanda Korber called for fewer police in the district, a sentiment Legal Aid DC eagerly shared on social media with a nod to #BlackLivesMatterDC.
In 2021, Legal Aid DC shared another article praising Black Lives Matter, featuring a quote from Minneapolis City Councilman Jeremiah Ellison. Ellison, son of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, was a leading figure in the failed push to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department. Meanwhile, Legal Aid DC backed legislation to make D.C. a “permanent” sanctuary city, blocking cooperation between local agencies and ICE.
Ira Mehlman, spokesperson for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, pointed out the recurring chaos caused by sanctuary policies. Harris, who has defended such policies, was assigned by President Biden to tackle the “root causes” of migration at the southern border. Yet, the Biden-Harris administration’s failure is glaringly apparent, with the Trump campaign recently releasing an ad holding Harris responsible for fentanyl deaths and border crossings.
In 2023, the same year Harris and Emhoff gave another $1,000 to Legal Aid DC, the organization backed a bill for a reparations task force and fund to address the impacts of slavery and systemic racism in D.C. Jen Jenkins, Legal Aid DC’s policy counsel, emphasized the need to acknowledge and rectify these historical wrongs. Unsurprisingly, Republicans have long opposed such reparations, arguing they are discriminatory and penalize those with no connection to slavery.
Gene Hamilton, director of America First Legal, blasted these proposals as unconstitutional. Despite the controversy, White House spokesperson Andrew Bates defended Harris’s donations, noting Legal Aid DC’s work with domestic violence victims. He also highlighted donations from top law firms like Kirkland & Ellis and Jones Day, which give to both Democrats and Republicans.
Of course, one of the top donors to Legal Aid DC in 2023 was Eric Holder’s law firm, Covington & Burling. Holder, Obama’s former attorney general, oversaw Harris’s vetting process for 2024 running mates. Talk about keeping it in the family!
Legal Aid DC, predictably, did not respond to requests for comment. Classic.
