The Socialist Youth wing of the Social Democratic Party in Switzerland has been gaining support for a massive death tax on wealthy people to save the weather from a non-existent problem. The Socialist Youth’s “Climate Tax” would seize 50% of the wealth of anyone whose assets exceed 51 million francs (about $56 million US dollars). What liberals and progressives of all stripes never seem to realize is that the rich are mobile.
Also, because they are rich, the rich are usually not stupid people (not all of them, anyway). No one willingly wants to give away a huge chunk of their children’s and grandchildren’s inheritance to the government for a stupid problem that no one believes is real.
Switzerland is currently home to 110 billionaires and even more multi-millionaires. Those people alone account for more than 50% of all income taxes that currently fund the Swiss government. Rather than surrender even more of their wealth to the government, they are now actively planning to leave Switzerland and renounce their citizenship.
The Socialist Youth considers their global warming tax to be “climate justice” against the rich. They blame the wealthy for supposedly destroying the climate because of their investments and consumer behavior. In case anyone has a Kamala Harris-level IQ, making lots of money or having lots of money in the bank does not impact the weather.
One of the wealthiest men in Switzerland is billionaire Peter Spuhler, the head of the company Stadler Rail. Spuhler is planning to leave the country about a month before Parliament votes on the global warming tax. If it passes, he says he’ll never come back.
Many rich people from the Nidwalden region in Switzerland have already fled the country. They won’t be the last.
